Forgive Mother Teresa

Even after reading this book, I am prepared to hold the Mother in great admiration. She, as a Christian, followed her faith’s dictum to convert. But she did lot more good to the dying than any other person in Calcutta.

I want to believe that Mother Teresa didn’t proselytize.

How much ever I want to believe, evidence that I see are to the contrary.

An interview with her in the magazine ‘India Today’ dated 31-May-1983  goes thus :

Q : As a Christian missionary, do you adopt a position of neutrality between Christian poor and other poor ?

A : I am not neutral. I have my faith.

Q : Do you believe in conversion ?

A : To me, conversion means changing of heart by love. Conversion by force or bribery is a shameful thing. It is a terrible humiliation for anyone to give up religion for a plate of rice.

To me, she seems genuine. She is a Christian, has her faith, is open about it and declares that she is not neutral when it comes to faith even when the poor are concerned.

So much so good. But the following piece is damning:

Christopher Hitchens, an author and columnist wrote a book by name ‘The Missionary Position – Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice’.

In the book he quotes from a former nun of Missionaries of Charity Susan Shields thus : For Mother, it was the spiritual well-being of the poor that mattered… In the homes for the dying, Mother taught the sisters how to secretly baptize those who were dying. Sisters were to ask each person in danger of death if he wanted a ‘ticket to heaven’. An affirmative reply was to mean consent to baptism. The sister was then to pretend she was just cooling the person’s forehead with a wet cloth, while in fact she was baptizing him, saying quietly the necessary words. Secrecy was important so that it would not come to be known that Mother Teresa’s sisters were baptizing Hindus and Moslems’.Teresa

Even after this, I am prepared to hold the Mother in great admiration. She, as a Christian, followed her faith’s dictum to convert. But she did lot more good to the dying than any other person in Calcutta.

So, what if she converted the dying after having taken care of the uncared for leper and the destitute and the like?

If she had converted people, forgive her, for she has cared for those that the other communities had abandoned.

If her organization has embezzled millions of dollars, forgive it , for it has saved at least some from disease.

If Missionaries of Charity has hobnobbed with dictators, forgive , for it has cared for the terminally ill patients.

In essence, forgive them, forgive her.

Amen.

It is bizarre to hype Rahul’s leave. Rahul Gandhi is not on holiday. Rahul Gandhi is not missing. He announced that he is going.
There have been times when I told Sonia Gandhi something and she says I should talk to Rahul Gandhi; sometimes I talk to Rahul and he says he needs to talk to Sonia Gandhi because she’s party president.
Today, decisions taken in Congress are neither Mrs Gandhi’s nor Rahul’s, they belong to both.
It is unfair to judge Rahul Gandhi when he is not been in command. He should be made the president of the party and let people see his capabilities. I know what he is capable of and it will all come out when he takes up the leadership.
Rahul Gandhi told me two years ago that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) should have elections. It did not happen because there was a section in the party who were able to convince the other section that we shouldn’t. If Rahul Gandhi were the party president, we would have had elections to the CWC… he is a great democrat.

நாராயணா மிஷனுக்குத் தொண்டூழியத்துக்கு அழைப்பு வந்திருந்தது. கிருஷ்ணன் குறுஞ்செய்தி வந்தவுடனேயே அலுவலகத்தில் தெரிவித்துவிட்டான் – அந்த வார இறுதியில் அலுவலகப்பணி செய்ய இயலாது என்றும் தொண்டூழியம் இருப்பதாகவும் மேலாளருக்கு மின்-அஞ்சல் அனுப்பி விட்டான்.

வார இறுதிப் பணி வருமானம் ஈட்ட உதவும். ‘ஓட்டி’ என்று அழைகப்படும் அப்பணிக்கு இரண்டு மடங்கு நாள் ஊதியம் உண்டு. ஆனாலும் மிஷனுக்கு வாக்கு கொடுத்து விட்டதால் அவனால் தட்ட முடியவில்லை. சென்ற வாரமும் ‘சிண்டா’ ஆதரவில் நடைபெற்ற குருதிக்கொடை முகாமில் தொண்டூழியம் செய்திருந்தான் கிருஷ்ணன்.

நாராயணா மிஷன் அவனுக்கு மன நிறைவு அளிக்கும் ஒன்று. வயதான, உடல் நலிவுற்ற பெரியவர்கள் பலர் அங்கு தங்கியிருந்தனர். அவர்களைப் பார்த்துக்கொள்ள தாதியர் இருந்தாலும் கிருஷ்ணன் போன்றவர்கள் செல்வது சிறு சிறு துப்புரவுப் பணிகள், சுவற்றிற்கு வெள்ளை அடித்தல் போன்ற வேலைகள் செய்யவே.

ஒவ்வொரு முறை கிருஷ்ணன் மிஷன் போகும் போதும் தனது நெடு நாள் கடமை ஒன்று முடிவது போல் உணர்வான். அந்த உணர்வுக்காகவே அவன் மிஷன் ஊழியம் என்றால் உடனே ஒப்புக் கொள்வான்.

சனி முழுவதும் மிஷனில் வேலை இருந்த்து. மின் விளக்குகளைச் சுத்தம் செய்வது, மிஷன் உள் இருக்கும் பெரியவர்களுக்கு வெளியில் இருந்து உணவு வாங்கி வருவது என்று இடுப்பொடிய வேலை. ஆனால் இது ஒரு சுகமான சுமை என்பதை அவன் உண்ர்ந்தே இருந்தான்.

சிராங்கூன் சாலையில் இந்திய உணவுக் கடைக்குச் சென்று உணவு வாங்கி வருவது மட்டுமே இதில் பெரிய வேலை. உணவை அங்கிருந்து கொண்டுவருவது கிருஷ்ணனுக்கு எரிச்சலூட்டியது. எம்.ஆர்.டி, நிலையம் சென்று, தொடர் வண்டியில் உணவுப் பொட்டலங்களைக் கொண்டு வர முடியுமோ முடியாதோ. ஏதாவது புது விதி வந்திருந்தால் என்ன செய்வது? திரும்பவும் எம்.ஆர்.டி. நிலையத்திற்கு வெளியே வந்து டாக்ஸி எடுக்க வேண்டும்.

டாக்ஸி கிடைப்பது சிராங்கூன் சாலையில் கொஞ்சம் சிரமமான ஒன்று தான். அதுவும் சனிக்கிழமை டாக்ஸி கிடைப்பது ‘சிங்கப்பூர் பூல்’ மூலம் கோடீஸ்வரராவது போன்றது. பெரும்பாலும் நடக்காது.

அப்படித்தான் சில நாட்கள் முன்பு எக்ஸ்போ விற்பனையகத்தில் 42 அங்குல தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டி வாங்கிக்கொண்டு வந்தான். ஆனால் எக்ஸ்போ எம்.ஆர்.டி. நிலையத்தில் ஏற்ற விட வில்லை. ஏதோ டாக்ஸிப் பயன்பாட்டை அதிகப்படுத்தவென்றே செய்யப்பட்ட ஒரு ஏற்பாடு என்று அப்போது தோன்றியது கிருஷ்ணனுக்கு.

ஆனால் மிஷன் தொண்டூழியத்தில் டாக்ஸி செலவு பற்றி கிருஷ்ணன் கவலைப்படவில்லை. அதற்கான நேரம் மட்டுமே அவனை வாட்டியது. எவ்வளவோ செலவு செய்கிறோம், டாக்ஸி செலவு ஒன்றும் பெரிதில்லை என்றுதான் நினைத்தான்.

ஒருவழியாக உணவுப்பொட்டலங்களை எல்லாம் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்த்து, உணவைப் பங்கிட்டுப் பெரியவர்களுக்கு அளித்து, அவர்கள் உண்பதை நிறைந்த மனதோடு பார்த்தபடி நின்றிருந்தான். இரவு மணி 9 ஆனது தெரியவில்லை.

தொண்டூழியம் முடித்து ஜூராங் வந்து தன் வீவக வீட்டை அடைந்த போது மணி 10:30. படுக்கையில் சாய்ந்தபடியே கைத் தொலைபேசியை எடுத்தான். 28 அழைப்புகள் வந்திருந்தன. அனைத்தும் சென்னையிலிருந்து.

வந்திருந்த எண்ணை அழைத்தான் கிருஷ்ணன். மறு முனையில் ‘எஸ்.எஸ்.எம். ரெசிடென்சி ஃபார் எல்டர்லி கேர் பெருங்களத்தூர்’ என்றது பெண் குரல். ‘அறை எண் 400’ என்றபடி எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் காத்திருந்தான்.

‘ஏண்டா கிருஷ்ணா, கார்த்தாலேர்ந்து போனே பண்ணலையேன்னுதான் நான் பண்ணினேன். இன்னிக்கி யரோ பெரியவாள்ளாம் வந்து எங்க ஹோம்ல இருக்கறவாளுக்கெல்லாம் அன்ன தானம் பண்ணினா.  ஆமாம், நீ என்ன சாப்டே ?”, என்றாள் அம்மா.

The ‘Sir’ in question is the watchman.
No, madam is busy. Cannot meet. Got appointment?
No, just wanted to see if if she is free to speak for 5 mins regarding admission.
See, madam cannot meet anyone without appointment.
I know that. Just 2-3 minutes is sufficient. I am coming from another country and couldn’t fix appointment.
See, if this is for admission, then it is not there.
Sir, may I meet the principal to speak about admission?
You see, madam will say the same thing. She will say ‘ no admission’.
Ok, may I speak to her on the phone?
Yes, you can. Number is on the school arch.
If she can speak on phone, why can’t she meet ?, I ponder.

US to base four warships in Singapore as China flexes military muscles

This is the best thing to happen to SE Asia. Countering China the way it understands, is as imperative as getting vaccinated while travelling to Africa.
I further urge the quadrilateral alliance of India, Japan, Australia and the US to get operational soon so that sends a message to China.

Four US warships designed to fight in coastal areas similar to south-east Asian waters will operate out of Singapore by 2018, a senior US Navy official said Tuesday, further underscoring Washington’s military tilt to Asia.

The “rotational deployment” of the vessels, called littoral combat ships (LCS), comes as China continues to flex its muscles in the South China Sea and tensions remain on the Korean Peninsula.

“We will soon see up to four LCS here in Singapore as we rotationally deploy Seventh Fleet ships,” said Rear Admiral Charles Williams.

“We envision four ships here by May 2017 to sometime in 2018… but I think what you have is that by 2018, four LCS ships will be rotationally deployed here to Singapore.”

Williams, commander of the Seventh Fleet’s Task Force 73, was speaking to reporters aboard the USS Fort Worth, an LCS on a 16-month deployment…

Taxi taxi, some mercy mercy

The usual Sunday lull in traffic was appealing. Little did I know that this was an ominous
sign.

I was gleefully waiting for bus number 30 to arrive. Little Bharat was to appear for the second level Olympiad exams. It was 9:40 AM and the test was at 10:30 .

Bharat was eager to get to school and asked,’What if I complete the exam before time ? Shall we go to a movie?’

He kept glancing at his digital watch just as time passed without any sign of our bus no 30.
Two buses came one behind the other, sporting the route number 143. Ten minutes and many glances at the watch later, another bus arrived. This time it was 78.

Sweat began to appear on my forehead as the time was nearing 10 AM. Ten more minutes, another 143 came by.

I realized it was no use to wait for the bus. But it dawned on me that there was no taxi
visible until then which didn’t have the ‘BUSY’ or ‘ON CALL’ sign lit. And all taxis were going towards Clementi bus terminus – the exact opposite direction to where we were headed.

Time was 10:15. Bharat was becoming restless. He asked,’Would we reach before time?’.

I decided to take a chance. I chose the next bus. It was 78. Nevertheless we boarded that just to move further towards the school. Plan was to get down at the next stop and look for some taxis.

Voila, the bus took a different route and entered into an industrial area where no human
existence was to be seen. Time was 10:20. We alighted and entered the wide expanse of a road and had stray dogs for company. That being a Sunday, there was no industrial activity and hence no human being in sight. We began to walk towards West Coast Road, or so we thought.

It was 10:25 and it began to be clear that we would not be able to make it to school. So I
tried calling the school from my handphone. The call went to the reception where there was none to attend the call. All the while I was giving false hope to Bharat that we would go to school on time.

Further wait on the West Coast highway resulted in many lorries and vans passing by without any sign of a taxi yet.

At last, at around 10:35, a taxi showed up, or so it appeared to me. I walked briskly to the
driver.

‘Where are you going?’, he asked in a rapid manner.

‘To Taman Jurong’, I replied while gasping for breath, the walking ordeal having its effect on me.

‘No, I am on my way to Pasir Ris’, the driver replied. Pasir Ris is on the Eastern end of the
city state while Taman Jurong is on the west, just 3 kms from where I stood.

‘Ok, I am in a hurry. The child needs to take at a test at 10:30. Now it is 10:40. Could you
please drop in Taman Jurong and then proceed to Pasir Ris?’, I pleaded.
‘You are in a hurry. That is your problem. I am in a hurry and that is my problem. I cannot
solve your problem’, he said and sped.

Having never been treated thus in Singapore, I tried running behind the taxi just in case the driver changed his mind.

Hard luck and I resumed my walk with Bharat and the stray dogs towards West Coast Road and towards human existence.

It was a sunny day and we were sweating all over. I managed to speak to the Principal on the phone and got a 10 minute target to reach the school.

We walked along the West Coast Highway towards West Coast Road. It was a good 10 minute walk and Bharat was visibly tired. He was struggling to hold back tears on this Sunday debacle.

A taxi came up from nowhere and I explained my predicament.

The driver said,’10:30 exam and it is 10:50 already. Come on hurry up’ and he sped along the Ayer Rajah Express way like a plane.

When we reached school at 11:00 AM, the principal was kind enough to permit the child to appear for the test.

But Bharat finished the test in 30 mins. The ordeal of more than an hour was over in 30 mins.

If only the West Coast Highway taxi driver had been a little merciful..

நம்மாழ்வார் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டாரா ?

இலக்கிய வட்டக் கூட்டத்தில் இன்று பேரா.முருகரத்னம் ‘வள்ளுவரை அறிவோம்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் பேசினார். கூட்டம் வழக்கம் போல் இல்லாமல் பெரும் கலந்துரையாடலாக அமைந்தது. வள்ளுவர் சமய சார்பற்றவர் என்பதை நிறுவப் பலர் முயன்றனர். நான் கீழ்காணும் சான்றுகளைக் கூறி அவர் சைவ, வைணவ, வைதீக சமயத்தவர் என்று வாதிட்டேன்.

1. ‘இந்திரனே சாலும் கரி’
2. அடியளந்தான் தாயது எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு’
3. மஹாலக்ஷ்மி பற்றிய குறிப்பு
4. ஊழ் ( விதி ) பற்றிய குறிப்பு ( ‘ஊழையும் உப்பக்கம் காண்பர்..)
5. ஏழு பிறப்புகள் – ‘எழுமைக்கும் ஏமாப்புடைத்து’.)
6. தாமரைக் கண்ணன் உலகு..’
7. ‘தென்புலத்தார் தெய்வம் விருந்து ஒக்கல் தான்..’
8. ‘ஆ பயன் குன்றும் அறுதொழிலோர் நூல் மறப்பர்..’ – பசு, அந்தணர் பற்றிய குறிப்பு

ஆனால் வள்ளுவரை எம்மதமும் சாராதவர் என்று காட்ட வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் இருந்ததாகவே இன்றைய விவாதங்கள் எனக்குக் காட்டின.

நம்மாழ்வாரை வைதீகர்கள் ஒதுக்கி வைத்தனர் என்றும், அவரை வைத்துத் தான் தென்கலை, வடகலை பேதங்கள் ஏற்பட்டன என்றும் பேராசிரியர் கூறினார். இது குறித்து Friedhelm Hardy என்னும் ஆங்கில அறிஞர் எழுதிய Nammazhwar – The untouchable saint என்னும் நூலில் இப்படிக் கூறியுள்ளார் என்றும் பேசினார். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து ‘நம்மாழ்வாரும் வள்ளுவரும்’ என்று ஒரு நூல் எழுதியுள்ளதாகத் தெரிவித்தார்.

என் கேள்விகள் :

நம்மாழ்வாரை யார் ஒதுக்கி வைத்தார்கள் ? திருமால், மஹாலக்ஷ்மி அதன் பின்னர் சடகோபன் என்கிற நம்மாழ்வார் என்றே வைணவ சம்பிரதாயம் வைத்துள்ளது.

‘என்னுயிர் தந்தளித்தவரைச் சரணம் புக்கு
யான் அடைவே அவர்குருக்கள் நிரை வணங்கிப்
பின்னருளால் பெரும்பூதூர் வந்த வள்ளல்
பெரியநம்பி ஆளவந்தார் மணக்கால் ந்ம்பி
நன்னெறியை அவர்க்குரைத்த உய்யக்கொண்டார்
நாதமுனி சடகோபன் சேனை நாதன்
இன்னமுதத் திருமகள் என்றிவரை முன்னிட்டு
எம்பெருமாள் திருவடிகள் அடைகின்றேனே’ என்று வழிபடு முறையை ‘அதிகாரசங்கிரகம்’ என்னும் நூல் சொல்கிறது.

சடகோபன் என்கிற நம்மாழ்வாருக்குப் பின்னரே லட்சுமி குறிப்பிடப் படுகிறாள்.

அத்துடன், நம்மாழ்வார் வேளாளர். அவரையே தெய்வமாகப் போற்றிய இன்னொரு ஆழ்வார் மதுர கவி ஆழ்வார்.  இவர் அந்தணர். ஆனாலும் ‘தேவு மற்றறியேன் குருகூர் நம்பி பாவின் இன்னிசை பாடித் திரிவனே’ என்று நம்மாழ்வாரைப் பற்றி மதுரகவி சொல்கிறார். ‘எனக்கு வேறு எந்தத் தெய்வமும் தேவை இல்லை. குருகூர் நம்பியான நம்மாழ்வாரின் பெயரைச் சொன்னபடியே  இருப்பேன்’ என்று சொல்கிறார்.

அந்தணரான மதுரகவி, வேளாளரான நம்மாழ்வாரை இவ்வாறு போற்றி இருக்கிறார். திருமால் கோவில்களில் ‘ஸ்ரீ சடாரி’ என்னும் திருமால் பாதங்கள் சடகோபன் ( நம்மாழ்வார்) என்றே வழங்கப்படுகின்றன.

மார்க்கட நியாயம், மார்ஜார நியாயம் என்று குரங்கு, பூனை நோக்கு என்கிற அடிப்படையில் தான் வடகலை, தென்கலைப் பிரிவுகள் உள்ளனவே ஒழிய, நம்மாழ்வாரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதனாலோ, கொள்ளாததனாலோ அல்ல.

நம்மாழ்வார் 7-9ம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்தவர். தென்கலை, வடகலைப் பிரிவுகள் 13-ம் நூற்றாண்டில் துவங்கின. தென்கலைக்குப் பிள்ளைலோகாச்சாரியாரும், வடகலைக்கு வேதாந்த தேசிகரும் தலைமை ஏற்றனர்.

இதுவும் தவிர், தமிழைத் தீட்டு மொழி என்று வைணவர்கள் சொன்னதில்லை. நம்மாழ்வாரின் பாசுரங்கள் வேதத்தின் சாரம் என்று ‘வேதம் தமிழ் செய்த மாறன்’ என்று போற்றப்படுகிறார்.
