Queries on a star migration

Smt.Khushbu Sundar, yesteryear movie star and a well known face in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has switched parties. This time she has moved to the nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that runs the country. Nothing wrong in a person joining a political party nor is it uncommon for a movie star to join a party in the movie obsessed state of Tamil Nadu where popular politicians were film stars of yore.

The fact that Khushbu has moved to the supposedly hindu-majority-seeking national party is not what this article is about. It is about the history that needs some clarification and answers from the former actor.

Prior to her political career, Khushbu had commented on the pre-marital sexual status of Tamil girls, was hounded by ultra-secessionist fringe outfits with physical violence, rushed into the embracing arms of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to find safety, later felt sidelined by the party, shifted places to the nationalist and supposedly ‘secular’ Congress Party, was appointed the national spokesperson, was sidelined by the multitude of factions, a characteristic of the party, and has now moved on to the diametrically opposite BJP.

Does an actor’s migration from politics of one color to the other merit a detailed article, one might ask. In the case of Khushbu, it does.

Khushbu’s utterances since she joined the BJP clearly show that she has joined the party not due to ideological enlightenment but due to lack of a political future in the Congress party that has seen a series of high profile exits after the lackluster performances of the party and its leaders in the last two general elections. With the leadership ensconced in ivory towers that provide little view of the ground situation, and a failed leader who wants to have power without responsibility, the Congress Party, that was founded by an European Allan Octavian Hume is being dragged hastily into its grave by yet another European – Smt.Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi. Thus, seeing no future, in the party, Khushbu has jumped boats.

Abandoning ship for ones’ own survival is normal. But in the case of Khushbu, her joining the very party that she has opposed virulently for the last 6 years, is a case for questioning in depth. For this, we would need to look at what she has said in the last 6 years about Prime Minister Modi in particular and the BJP in general.

Has none joined a party that they had opposed so violently? There are plethora of evidence that shows many had done. But the the kind of politics and statements that Khushbu had indulged in, even in the guise of being the national spokesperson for the Congress Party, do call for her to answer.

As late as October 6, 2020, Khushu had called out PM Modi’s act of rearing peacocks at his official residence and had said that the PM who could feed peacocks in his house, could not feed the citizens.After this, on October 11, 2020, she joined the PM’s party, the BJP.

When the BJP formed government in Madhya Pradesh, Khushbu had tweeted thus, saying the Madhya Pradesh cabinet would be constituted by these half clad sadhus, referring to the presence of holy men in the party and government.

On October 1, 2019, Khushbu famously said the that the Prime Minister would not be welcome to Tamil Nadu and one year later, joined the party.

Without having any basic knowledge of the current pandemic induced economic situation and consequent job losses, Khushbu had tweeted thus, accusing the BJP of causing such an unemployment situation of gargantuan proportions. And this was as late as October 4, 2020, six days prior to joining the same party. Even Singapore, the country that Khushbu often vacations in, declared that it was entering into a recession due to the pandemic.

Here is she using derogatory and potentially un-usable language on the BJP Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath on October 4, 2020.

While Khushbu would have to come clean on all the above, she has to make her stand clear on E.V.Ramasamy Naicker, the late rabble-rouser who never missed any opportunity to deride the hindu gods and the hindu pantheon, for she has recently claimed that ‘I am a Periarist in the BJP’ – whatever that might mean.

The BJP in Tamil Nadu needs such star power to get into power in the movie crazy state. But the erstwhile stars who join the party have the responsibility to either disown their earlier statements or offer a public apology for these past sins.

Whether Khushbu offers apology or not, I would be backing the BJP to come to power in the state. I would even vote for her in case the party fields her as a candidate in my constituency ( like I supported any PAP candidate in Singapore). However, the her sins of the past cannot be white washed.

தமிழக பாஜக கவனத்திற்கு..

பாஜக தலைவர் திரு.முருகன் அவர்களே, வணக்கம்.

சித்தாந்த ரீதியில் சொந்த வீடு என்றாலும் தவறென்றால் சொல்லத்தான் வேண்டும். 

‘சொன்னால் விரோதமிது ஆகிலும் சொல்லுவேன் கேண்மினோ’ என்னும் ஆழ்வார் வாக்கிற்கிணங்க சொல்லிவைக்கிறேன். 

நீங்கள் யாரோ ஒருவரைச் சமூகச் சீர்திருத்தக்காரர் என்று அபாண்டமாகச் சொன்னது தவறு என்றே நினைக்கிறேன். ‘உன்னை யார் கேட்டார்கள்?’ என்றால் யாரும் கேட்கவில்லை. ஆனாலும் தர்மம் எதுவோ அதைச் சொல்லவே ஸ்வதர்மம் பழக்கியுள்ளது. 

பாஜக அவருக்குக் கோவிலே கட்டினாலும் பாஜகவிற்குப் பலன் இருக்கப்போவதில்லை. அந்த மனிதரின் கொள்கையைத் தூக்கிப் பிடிப்பவர் / தூக்கிப் பிடிப்பதாகச் சொல்லிக்கொள்பவர்கள் யாரும் பாஜகவிற்கு வாக்களிக்கப் போவதில்லை. ஏனெனில் ஆட்டு மந்தைக் கூட்டத்திற்குச் சிந்திக்கத் தெரியாது. இல்லையென்றால் தெய்வத் தமிழ் மொழியைக் காட்டுமிராண்டி பாஷை என்றும், திருக்குறளை மலம் என்றும், கண்ணகியைத் ****ள் என்றும் வெளிப்படையாகச் சொன்ன கன்னடக்காரரைத் தமிழர் தலைவர், தந்தை என்று எந்த மானமுள்ள மனிதனும் தூக்கிப்பிடிக்க மாட்டான். 

இன்று மாரிதாசின் முயற்சியால் சாதாரண மக்கள் விழிப்புணர்வு பெற்றுள்ளனர். அந்த மூன்றெடுத்துப் பிம்பத்தை வைத்துப் பிழைப்போரைக் கேள்வி கேட்க மக்கள் தயாராகி வருகின்றனர். இந்த நிலையில் ஒன்று அவரை ஆதரிக்கிறோம், அவரை சமூகச் சீர்திருத்தவாதி என்று ஒப்புக்கொள்கிறோம் என்று சொல்லும் பத்து கட்சிகளில் பதினொன்றாகக் காட்டிக்கொண்டு, ஆகக் குறைவான வாக்கு வாங்கலாம். ஏனெனில் இருக்கும் அத்தனைக் கட்சிகளும் அந்த நபரை ஆதரிப்பவர்களே. ‘காங்கிரஸை அழிக்க வேண்டும்’ என்று முழங்கியவரை இன்று காங்கிரஸ் மதிப்பதாகக் கூறிக் கொள்வதைப் போல பாஜகவும் சொல்லி, காணாமல் போகலாம். 

இல்லையென்றால் ‘நாங்கள் அவரை மதிக்கவில்லை. ஏனெனில் பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆட்சியே நிலைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் , இல்லையேல் இந்தப் பரந்த பாரத நாடு துண்டாடப் பட வேண்டும் என்றும், சுதந்திர தினத்தைத் துக்க தினமாக அனுஷ்டித்தவரை நாங்கள் கடுகளவிற்குக் கூட மதிக்கவில்லை. இல்லாத விருதுகள் வாங்கியவர் என்று பொய்ப் பிம்பம் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டு ஊர் நெடுகிலும் சிலை வடியில் நிற்கும் அந்த நபரைக் கொண்டாடுவது ஜின்னாவைக் கொண்டாடுவது போன்றது. அகண்ட பாரதம் என்னும் உயரிய கருதுகோளைக் கொண்டவர்களாகிய எங்களால் தற்போதுள்ள பாரதத் தாய் துண்டாடப் பட வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பியவரை, இந்தப் பாரத நாட்டின் ஆன்மீக வேர்களை அவமரியாதை செய்தவரை, பாரதப் பண்பாட்டின் அடையாளமான ஶ்ரீராமர், விநாயகர் முதலியோரைக் கீழ்த்தரமாக விமர்சித்தவரை நாங்கள் கொண்டாடுவதை விடுங்கள், ஒரு தலைவராகக் கூட நினைத்துப் பார்க்க முடியாது’ என்று ஒரு நிலையை எடுத்தால், ‘ஓஹோ இந்தக் குருட்டு வழிபாட்டு வழியைத் தவறு என்று தெரிந்தாலும் ஆதரித்தே ஆக வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ஒன்றும் இல்லை போல’ என்கிற எண்ணம் திராவிட விஷப் பாம்புகளின் கீழ் வேறு வழியின்றி நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் தமிழக மக்கள் மத்தியில் உருவாகும். அவர்கள் உங்கள் பக்கம் வருவார்கள். 

எனவே, உங்கள் நிலைப்பாட்டை ஸ்திரப்படுத்திக்கொள்ளுங்கள். அதற்கு ‘சிந்தன் பைடக்’ ஒன்றை ஏற்பாடு செய்து விவாதித்து நிலைப்பாட்டை வகுத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். 

அதை விடுத்து, ‘எங்காத்துக்காரரும் கச்சேரிக்குப் போனார்’ கதையாக நடந்துகொண்டால், தனியாக நிற்க வேண்டியது தான். தொண்டர்களும் குழம்பி, மக்களும் வெறுத்து … அந்த வாழ்க்கை பாஜகவிற்கு வேண்டாம்.

ஆக, அவரைப் போற்றுவதாகக் காண்பித்துக்கொண்டு ‘also ran’ என்று வருவது. அப்படித்தான் செய்வோம் என்றால் அடல்ஜி, சியாமா பிரசாத் முகர்ஜி வரிசையில் இவரின் படத்தையும் உங்கள் பதாகைகளில் போட்டுக்கொள்ளுங்கள். இல்லை அவரைக் கொண்டாடாமல் ‘நான் வெளியிட்ட செய்தி தவறானது. மன்னிக்கவும். நாங்கள் அவரைக் கொண்டாடவில்லை’ என்று அறிவிப்பது. 

தனது இறுதி வரை அந்த நபரின் கொள்கையை எதிர்த்த முத்துராமலிங்கத் தேவரைக் கொண்டாடும் போது அவர் எதிர்த்த மனிதரைக் கொண்டாடுவது சரியா என்று யோசித்துப் பாருங்கள்.

அரசியல் சரி நிலை என்பது இப்பொது உங்களுக்குத் தேவையற்றது. தேசத்திற்குச் சரியானது மட்டுமே உங்களிடம் எதிர்பார்ப்பது. 

எதிர்பார்ப்பை வீணாக்கிவிடாதீர்கள்.

சிங்கப்புரின் தந்தை அமரர் லீகுவான்யூ அவர்கள் ராஹுல் காந்தியிடம், ‘உன்னைச் சுற்றி உன்னைவிட அறிவுடையவர்களைக் கொண்டிரு’ என்று அறிவுறுத்தியிருந்ததாக ‘India Rising’ நூலையெழுதியவரும் Straits Times இதழின் இணைஆசிரியருமான ரவி வெள்ளுர் சொல்கிறார்.
 
ராகுல் காந்தி  அதைக் கேட்கவில்லையென்று தோன்றுகிறது.  இல்லையென்றால் துபாயில் இப்படிப் பேசியிருக்க மாட்டார்.
 
‘காந்தியடிகள் தான் அஹிம்சை முறையைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டது இஸ்லாம்,கிறித்தவம்,யூதம் முதலிய இந்தியத் தத்துவங்களில்   இருந்தே..’ 
 
தகவல் பிழைகள் இருக்கலாம்.ஆனால் அடிப்படையான பண்பாட்டு அறிவு சற்றும் அற்ற ஒருவரே இப்படி ஒரு பேச்சு எழுதிக்கொடுத்திருக்க முடியும்.
 
பவுத்தம்,ஜைனம் இவையெல்லாம் பாரதத்தில் தோன்றிய தரிசனங்கள் இல்லை. அமெரிக்காவில் இருந்து ஏற்றுமதியானவையாக இருக்கலாம். திருக்குறளில் ‘கொல்லாமை’ என்னும் அதிகாரம் இல்லை.. .என்பதால் அப்படி எழுதிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டார்கள் போல.
 
‘வைஷ்ணவ ஜனதோதேனேகஹியே’ என்ற காந்தியடிகளின் பிரியமான பாட்டெழுதிய பதினைந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டு நரஸி மேத்தா
பாரஸீகக் கவிஞ்ரோ என்று தில்லி ஜவஹர்லால் பல்கலையில் விசாரித்துப் பார்க்க வேண்டுமோ என்னவோ. இந்தப் பாடலில் இருந்து அவர் அஹிம்சையைக் கற்றுக் கொள்ளவில்லை என்று நினைத்துவிட்டார்கள் போல..
காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி அழிய வேண்டும் என்று நான் விரும்பவில்லை.தேசியக் கட்சிகள் அழிவது நல்லதன்று.ஆனால், ராஹுல் காந்தி இம்மாதிரி பிதற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தால் அது நடந்துவிடும் போல் தோன்றுகிறது. தேர்தல் வெற்றிகள் ஒரு பொருட்டல்ல.
 
காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியில் படித்தவர்கள் சேர வேண்டும். இந்தியப் பண்பாடுகளில் ஊறியவர்கள் காங்கிரஸிலும் சென்று சேர வேண்டும்.ஒரு படி மேலேபோய் ‘Inflitration’ கூட பண்ண வேண்டும் என்று சொல்வேன்.ஒரேயடியாக JNUவாசிகள்,Doon Schoolவாசிகள் அதிகரித்துவிட்டதால் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சிக்கும் ஒரு நாலாந்தர லெட்டர் பேட் கட்சிக்கும் வேறுபாடு தெரியாமல் போய்விட்டது.
இந்திய தேசிய சிந்தனாவாதிகள் காங்கிரசிற்குள் நுழைய வேண்டும். 1948 காங்கிரஸ் செயற்குழுவில் வல்லபாய் படேல் இதை வலியுறுத்துகிறார். RSS அங்கத்தினர்கள் காங்கிரஸில் சேர வேண்டும் என்கிறார் படேல்.  
 
அவர் சொல்கிறார் “In the Congress, those who are in power feel that by virtue of authority they will be able to crush the RSS. You cannot crush an organisation by using the danda [stick]. The danda is meant for thieves and dacoits. They are patriots who love their country. Only their trend of thought is diverted. They are to be won over by Congressmen with love.”
அவர் மேலும் சொல்வது “the only way for them(RSS) is to reform the Congress from within, if they think the Congress is going on the wrong path.”
 ஆனால் பண்டித நேருவின் முயற்சியால் இது வெற்றி பெறவில்லை.  பின்னர் இந்திய தேசியச் சிந்தனையாளர்களும், காங்கிரசும் இரு வேறு துருவங்களில் பயணித்தன. விளைவு : இன்று நம்மிடையே இருக்கும் இந்திய தேசிய காங்கிரஸின் எச்சம்.
 
காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி என்றாலே ஏதோ பிரிவினைவாதக் கட்சி போன்ற தோற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்த அதன் தமிழகத் தலைவர்கள் முயல்கிறார்கள் அல்லது பிரிவினை வாதிகளுடன் கூட்டுச் சேர்கிறார்கள். ஆ.ராஜா, ஸ்டாலின் இருவரும் பிரிவினையை ஆதரித்துச் சமீபத்தில் கூட
 பேசியுள்ளனர். அதே வேகத்தில் தில்லியின் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சித் தலைமையிடமும் கூட்டணி பற்றிப் பேசுகின்றனர்.
மத்தியத் தலைமைக்கு ஒத்து ஊதும் தலைவர்களாகத் தமிழகக் காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர்கள் உள்ளனர் என்பது புதிய தகவல் அன்று தான். ஆனால், உயர் பல்கலைகளில் உள்ள தேசியச் சிந்தனை உள்ள மாணாக்கர், பா.ஜ.க. பற்றிய நல்ல எண்ணம் கொண்டுள்ளது போல், காங்கிரஸ் பற்றியும் நல்லெண்ணம் கொள்ளுமளவிற்கு நல்லவர்கள் அக்கட்சியில் சேர வேண்டும்.  அப்போது தான் ராஹுல் காந்திக்கு நல்ல பேச்சு-எழுதுபவர்கள் கிடைப்பார்கள்.
காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி காப்பாற்றப் பட வேண்டும். தேச ஒற்றுமைக்காகக் குரல் கொடுக்கும் கட்சிகள்,அமைப்புகள் காப்பாற்றப் பட வேண்டும். அது பாரத தேசத்திற்குச் செய்யும் சேவை. நாசகாரக் கம்யூனிஸ்டுகள், மக்களின் சாதீய உணர்ச்சிகளைத் தூண்டி அவற்றில் குளிர் காயும் புலிப் பணக் கட்சிகள், சினிமா நடிகர்களின் அமைப்புகள் என்பன தேசத்திற்கு நன்மை செய்ய வந்தவையன்று. 
 
சபரிமலை விஷயத்தில் பா.ஜ.க., காங்கிரஸ் இரண்டும் இறுதியாகக் கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரே மாதிரியான கருத்தைக் கொண்டுள்ளன. காங்கிரஸின் இந்த நிலை  தேசத்தின் பண்பாட்டின் மீதுள்ள பக்தியால் ஏற்பட்ட விளைவு என்று எண்ணும் அளவிற்கு நான் அசடன் அல்லன்.
ஆனால், இரு கட்சிகளுமே பண்பாடு சார்ந்த ஒற்றுமையக் காக்கும் விஷயங்களில் ஒரே நிலைப்பாடு எடுக்க வேண்டும். அதற்குத் தேசியத்திலும், நமது பண்பாட்டுக் கூறுகளிலும் தேர்ச்சியும் நம்பிக்கையும் பெற்ற ஊழியர்கள் / தொண்டர்கள் / தலைவர்கள் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சிக்குக் கிடைக்க வேண்டும்.
ஒற்றை வரியில் சொல்வதானால் : ஆண்டாள் பற்றி ஒரு மன நலம் குன்றியவர் பேசிய போது முதலில் வீதிக்கு வந்து போராடுபவர்களாக, ஆண்டாளுக்காகக் குரல் கொடுப்பவர்களாகக் காங்கிரஸார் இருக்க வேண்டும். தற்போது Utopia போல் தோன்றலாம். ஆனால் பக்தவத்சலம் / காமராஜ் / ராஜாஜி முதலானோரின் ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் இருந்த காங்கிரஸ் இவ்வாறு செய்திருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.
சுருக்கமாக: வல்லபாய் படேலின் கனவு நனவாக வேண்டும்.
வலுவான பா.ஜ.க., அதற்கு ஈடு கொடுக்கும் அளவில் அதே பலம் பொருந்திய,  தேசியச் சிந்தனை கொண்டவர்கள் உள்ள காங்கிரஸ் என்று இரு தூண்களின் மேல் பாரதம் உயர்ந்து நிற்க வேண்டும்.

A note to the Centre

Nothing can be farther from truth than the belief that the Left, in India, is dead. When it was in power, it at least had the chains of a modicum of responsibility. However, even as late as the disastrous UPA-1 experiment, they resorted to blackmail politics and had no qualms in enjoying power without responsibility. Nuclear deal is a case in point.

Now that it has been decimated in all the states in the recent elections, chances that the left would resort to the university-chaos technique, are more. The chaos experiment has produced great results for them in JNU. With the incendiary environment in Tamil Nadu, aided amply by the unaccounted erstwhile Tiger money and demise of a strong state CM, the left inspired chaos-theory could gain ground. Religious NGO led funding is always at hand, just in case there is a shortage (Eg: Kudankulam, Marina, Neduvasal).

The Centre should act as a strong central govt, crack the whip, and rein in the anti-national elements with all the force it can muster. The state of Tamil Nadu has long suffered from absence of governance and orientation towards the national mainstream.

When the center does something for TN, talk about it, in Tamil, in Chennai and in all other places. Ask central ministers to conduct press conferences and answer questions. Show that the party is definitely a party with a difference.

The BJP needs to provide credible, young leaders in the state, who are grounded in the nationalist ideology, can articulate better both in Tamil and English, with the force necessary, in the national and local television channels, have a better connect with the students and youngsters, and, in general, represent the new generation.

And, for God’s sake, eschew tinsel sentinels. TN needs change not only in the body, but also in the soul. Hence no more tinsel souls in a new body, please. And no cut-out / banner culture please.

Mind it. The Left has nothing to lose but everything to gain from a disoriented Tamil Nadu that is looking for another ’cause’ to fight. A Left gain is not good for the nation.

What to do with Arun Shourie

Arun Shourie came into my life on a Sunday in May, 1998.

He had written an article about the second Pokhran blast by A.B.Vajpayee. His premise was simple; he had collected what ten liberals had said about the second Pokhran blast and also what the same worthies had said in 1974 when Smt.Indira Gandhi had conducted the first nuclear test.The comparison was so timely and incisive, that I immediately fell in love with Arun and began to gobble-up what ever had to say on anything.

My love affair intensified when I began to read his books. His ‘Eminent Historians’ where he had called out the hypocrisy of the left intellectuals about the way they had gone ahead and changed our history, was a masterpiece. i was impressed with the volumes of evidence that he had given, citing very authentic sources.I was floored.

Then came ‘Falling over backwards’ – the treatise on the stupidity called reservations that was doing the country great harm in every sphere. His extensive research for the topic from court judgements to details from different books, details about how even Ambedkar was against reservation et al opened me to research methodologies that I was not used to.

There was no stopping from then on. i gobbled up his books one by one-‘Worshipping False Gods’,’The world of Fatwas or Shariah in action’, ‘Missionaries in India’, ‘The only fatherland’ and many other articles on different subjects kept me in awe and I began to emulate Shourie sub-consciously so much so that  my own research articles on different political happenings were modelled on Shourie’s approach.

Then came Shourie’s ‘Does He know a mother’s heart’ – a book on how different religions see pain and suffering. I must confess that he made me an atheist for a long time due to the sheer brilliance of the book. Then came the one on India’s China policy and the failures of Panditji in dealing with China.

Shourie’s books have no parallel. His research is thorough, his methods of exposition brilliant and his integrity beyond question. His handling of the disinvestment and telecom ministries during the Vajpayee regime had set standards on how a minister should leverage the bureaucracy and get things done rather than hide behind red-tapism and while away time at office.

Such a person should ideally have been part of the government under Modi. But I assume that stature issues could have hindered the smooth functioning of the government and hence he has not been part of the Modi government.

If I were Modi, I would tap into Shourie’s reservoir of wisdom to steer the country forward rather than make the intellectual come out in public and vent his disenchantments.

Modi-fied silence

One can be stupid. But one cannot pretend to be stupid yet want to be called clever.

This is what the Narendra Modi government is like today. One the one hand Modi speaks of probity in public life and on the other the party has Sushma and Vasundhara who have become so infamous in the last two weeks that even A.Raja of the DMK appears to be a saint.

Let us face the facts. L.K.Advani was framed in the Hawala case by Narasimha Rao in 1996-97. He resigned on the same day asking to expedite the probe. He never contested elections until he was cleared of charges. Later he became the deputy prime minister under Vajpayee. That is a standard that he set for all politicians in India.

Vasundhara and Sushma, as what we see in the media, are deeply entangled in this Lalit Modi scam. Let us for a moment assume there is nothing in the scam and all activities were done in a bona-fide manner. What does it cost to ask the two ladies to resign, probe the scam and later re-induct them into the ministries once they are acquitted ? Does the government not have enough heads if these two are to be temporarily dropped ?

The RSS, the custodian of morality, is quiet. And that is unbecoming of the 90 year old organization. As also is Narendra Modi.

Justice should not only be done but also appear to be done.

Bladder control and railways

When hardly had I spent 20 minutes, did I need to empty my bladder. I withheld the urge for another 20 minutes. I didn’t want to spoil the morning for the co-waiters in the queue and decided to visit the washroom.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

I never knew that I needed to master the art of bladder control to get a ‘tatkal’ ticket at Tambaram railway station.

Here is what happened :

I went to Tambaram railway station at 7:30 AM for the ‘Tatkal’ ticket to be issued at 10:00 AM. With photocopies of all necessary documents in place, I started my waiting marathon of 2:30 hours.

When hardly had I spent 20 minutes, did I need to empty my bladder. I withheld the urge for another 20 minutes. I didn’t want to spoil the morning for the co-waiters in the queue and decided to visit the washroom.

There was none. Yes, there was no washroom. I asked for help. Every person available in the vicinity pointed me in a different direction which resulted in my going round the railway station thrice, disturbing many half naked people in different stages of defecation or urination at different places along the tracks and behind buildings and under bushes.

Unable to contain further, I approached a person who resembled a cleaner in the platform. He said that the existing washroom had been demolished and a new one was under construction. Praising the genius who decided to demolish a current facility before having something in its place, I explored further to get rid of my agony.

I couldn’t contain any further. I decided to open up somewhere behind a lonely bush. Suddenly there emerged a figure in ragged clothes from behind the bush asking me something in a language that I didn’t recognize. I beat a hasty retreat.

After a 30 minute walk around the bushes, ruined buildings and many railway tracks, I came back to the ‘tatkal’ reservation counter, fully loaded and waiting to explode.

Due to divine intervention, nothing untoward happened and the co-waiters in the queue were saved, for I was able to contain myself until I got the ticket.

I saw several elderly women in the queue, waiting for more than 3 hours. How would they relieve themselves ? Why does the railway administration not take the convenience of the passengers into consideration while deciding on demolishing essential facilities ?

Why are the railway department, ministry and board stuck in pre-colonial times that they are totally indifferent to the needs of the passengers ?

What is needed is a washroom in every railway station . Wi-Fi and fancy stuff can wait.

Jayant Sinha – a jewel in India's finance ministry

Jayant Sinha is an IIT and Harvard Business School graduate. He is the Minister of State for Finance in the Modi government.

A silent performer that he is, recently he chaired an informal meeting of CEOs from the following corporates :

  • Siemens India
  • eBay India
  • Shell
  • Novartis Pharma
  • Areva TD

There were other CEOs as well. I don’t remember the names. They discussed about infrastructure development, GST implementation, taxation and capital convertibility. The minister had emphasized the ‘Make in India’ policy of PM Modi and the CEOs discussed the modalities of ‘Make in India’.

The point to note is : At the end of the meeting, the CEOs were very happy that they have, at last, a MoS Finance that is in touch with reality, knows what he is talking about, keen to learn from corporates and implement in government. And the best part was the minister was a keen listener who let the CEOs talk more.

This meeting was a closed door one hosted by a bank. It is heartening to note that an Union Minister of State met with corporate CEOs without any help from bureaucrats and spoke on equal terms with them and spoke about development and infrastructure.

I wholeheartedly welcome this meeting and hope India proceeds in the direction of a country that is run like a company albeit in a benign fashion.

Incidentally, Jayant Sinha is the son of former Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha.

How stupid can they be !

T and JNo, definitely this is not about the man in white a.k.a. Rahul. But this is definitely about the Congress.

By now the reader would have been familiar with the phenomenon that anything that has got to do with the Congress has got to be stupid. And being and acting stupid are the prerequisites of being in the Congress, I mean the Congress party in India. I don’t know if this explanation can be expanded to include the institution in the US with the same name – Congress.

Let us come back to the Congress of India.

For some strange reason, Shashi Tharoor realized that Narendra Modi had turned into a graceful person in two weeks’ time. Until the 26-May he was a pugnacious, wily, aggressive, divisive, communal leader who needed to be despised with all the powers that one would have at ones’ disposition. And once Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he turned into a Modi 2.0 – gracious, charming, likable, secular kid of the block.

What did Shashi Tharoor find in the two weeks is a mystery. But let me not let the cat out by pre-judging his praise of Modi as his inability to remain just an M.P. I can’t definitely say that he is looking for a job. But that could be a reason too.

Why do I suspect that he needs a job ? Well, he was a Minister for Twitter for some time when he helped Twitter grow its market share in India. And then he came close to losing his job because his hand ached from too much tweeting from an aeroplane’s cattle-class a.k.a. Economy Class. Later he ‘helped’ sponsor his then-girlfriend-but-later-turned-wife’s cricket team win favour in Kerala. And thus lost his job to become full time husband and proceeded from then on.

But it is difficult to stay with a wife doing nothing otherwise. So he re-joined the earlier ministry and spent his time speaking in the studios of the prime time televisions. But alas, the government was voted out and he became an ordinary M.P. yet again.

His is the case of ‘Twice bitten, never shy’. Now he is ready for another round at Delhi.

Mani TharoorBut Mani Shankar Aiyer’s case is not so straight forward. Having helped Modi secure a grand victory by his usually arrogant remarks which over worked this time and made him the Prime Minister, Mani is left with no further activity.

At least when the mother and son ( read ‘His circus masters’) were in power, he had a job as their speech-writer. Probably his language became more acerbic and vitriolic that even the mother and son did not understand who Mani was after, he soon lost his job as the official speech writer for the family. Later he switched to Toast Mastering in the national prime time televisions. The TV crew that recorded his debates became so used to his jibes and acerbic tongue that they were afflicted with Peptic Ulcer and quit their jobs.

Then Mani started his monologues on TV – his version of monologue was that he didn’t allow anybody else in a panel discussion to speak that even the programme anchors did not know if it was a panel discussion or a Pakistani citizen’s lung power check-up.

Now that he has been decimated in his constituency Mayiladuthurai ( in deep interior Tamil nadu, India), he has taken to his usual task of sound-biting err.. sound-puking.

But this time, he has started puking at his own Congress-mate Shashi Tharoor.

Probably Mani is jealous that Tharoor might land a job with Modi.

Poor Mani does not know that if he needs a job, he needs to say so. He should not attack a co-applicant.

Probably it is too much to expect from Mani. He is from St.Stephen, you see, the stupidity hotbed of India.
