Look at the above cartoon from New York Times. Pay attention to the strong line that divides the two groups – one a couple of coat wearing, frown faced, bald headed, tea drinking elite closeted inside a glass windowed room and the other a dhoti wearing farmer with a cow, knocking at the door, trying to gain entry into the ‘elite’ room.
Does the cartoon say only this much ? I don’t think so. It says much more.
The ‘elite’ group is visibly annoyed – their frown gives it away. The farmer with the turban holds a lazy cow and apparently seeks admission for the cow as well. Well, to me, that conveys a subtle message. While the ‘elite’ group eats cow, the ‘non-elite’ farmer reveres the animal and seeks to get the due recognition for her. He apparently worships the animal – may be a pagan practice – nonetheless a show of gratitude for the animal that has served him well.
The frown on the ‘elite’ faces tells me something more. It shows a surprise and irritation – How did this lowly farmer come up the curve ? Did we not starve him of technology ? Did we not try to contain him by denying him the much needed propulsion technology in the mid-80s ? But what the ‘elite’ didn’t know was the very same technology denial resulted in more domestic research and indigenous technology development.
When India conducted the second nuclear test in 1999, the west imposed sanctions. The then PM Vajpayee said that the west needed India more than India needed the west. Well, there were the Coco Colas, Pepsis, IBMs and the other sundry western companies in India. Who would want to ignore a 1 bn strong market ? Sanctions were withdrawn in no time and it was business as usual. Where Clinton failed, Bush remedied. He forged closer ties with India and offered a nuclear deal with no strings attached.
There is an another irony in this. The west supplied Pakistan with arms and the Taliban – to fight the Soviets- and the same Taliban have turned against the former. But the west denied technology to India and the latter developed the necessary propulsion systems and are aiding the west in Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions ( the Moon and Mars missions). There is a civilizational difference between the two responses.
Speaking of civilization – well, that is a separate topic by itself – and nothing to do with the west though. They are as far away from civilization as is Sarah Palin from common sense.
Furguson might be far away. But the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the place are present all over the world. Not one country is bereft of the two question beginners. If that can happen in a developed country and still be under-reported, there is every reason that the same can happen regularly in the developing world and is not reported at all. That is the reality. Reality is not always pleasant.
The African American who was killed – was he guilty of something, was he an offender, did the police officer do justice ? These questions would be answered variously depending on the side of the racial and political divide you are located in. The truth of the matter might not even come out. We are still waiting to know who killed JFK and why, after 50 years. From drug lords to cold war Russia to Prez. Johnson – we have been given various whys and hows.
The same would happen in this Ferguson case as well.
Prez Obama famously declared to shut down Guantanamo bay. His second term presidency is shutting down in a couple of years. Not an inch has progressed in the prison closure case. In Iran’s case, excepting Ahmedinejad, nothing else has changed. Iraq situation seems to invite the US back into its quagmire. Afghanistan conundrum is not fully over yet. Similarly Ferguson would be forgotten in the next political battle between the President and the Congress.
Whether it is Ferguson or Guantanamo or Economic Crisis, nothing matters. An emotional and well body-languaged speech by President Obama would wash over any dirty scar on the American political discourse. James Foley et al would disappear into the collective American amnesia when Apple introduces the next iPhone.
So wait for the next speech and prepare for the holiday season. Life goes on. Economic prosperity is just an invasion away.
It was a hot Sunday afternoon and this flock of small birds drew my attention as they sharing the leftover water from a spill. The birds took turns to splash themselves. When one was wet, it let the next. Thus no bird was left behind.
There was no jostling or scampering. A bird’s flight in and another’s flight out seemed to have been coordinated by an invisible hand.The communication among them was perfect though I didn’t get a bit.
The birds seemed to tell me something.
‘You stupid humans, stop fighting for resources. Learn to share and be happy. O, America don’t invade for oil and keep the spoil. O Muslim States, don’t kill and impose your will. The Sea of China is for all; so don’t create a free for all. O Humans, You claim sixth sense yet behave with no sense You want the world as your treasure Yet never do you come up the measure For the world is for all for sure And you don’t understand for sure O humans, learn from us’
Let this year bring some semblance of balance in your dealings, stability in your affairs, prosperity to your folks and some new and creative music bands.
Music bands ? Yes, like The Beatles, let there be a new and all-consuming music band this year in your life so that your folks are preoccupied with that and not bother about what the neighbor does in his house.
Let your ears don’t lend themselves to be stuck to walls to overhear what the other guy speaks.
May your attention be devoted to improving domestic manufacturing and cash based consumption than credit based consumption. Let you folks be blessed with splendid cash so that they buy things out of their pocket and not out of my pocket from 8000 miles away.
May you be blessed with adequate sun-shine this year so that you seriously start thinking on harnessing Sun’s energy rather than ride on the back of religious hooligans of the middle east.
May this year make your Republicans a bit wiser than they have been in history for Republican Presidents have had better relations with India. Minus Richard Nixon, though. He didn’t have good relations even with his people.
Speaking of Republicans – I don’t mean I aspire for more intellectually challenged conservative theology students. I am looking for more George Bushes. I am sorry I should not have spoken about intelligence and Bush in the same vein. However, Bush was good for India.
The Reagan-Thatcher era was one of the most splendid times in history. Now India has a Mr.Thatcher at the helm. So a Reagan is what needs to be filled. Hope Obama transitions to a Reagan in 2016.
Let more Hillary books sell this year. That would ensure she would continue to write and not become President. Not that her writing is better but her Presidency would be worse.
Hope you guys forget the parched document signed in Philadelphia some 260 years ago. If not the document, forget at least the clause ‘in pursuit of happiness’. Your pursuit of happiness results in resource drain in the planet. And that has an inverse relation to the number of lunatics with guns out on jeeps pulling girls out of schools. Hence may your ‘pursuit of happiness’ be limited to domestic ones and not go international.
For heavens sake, please correct the dictionary for ‘civil rights’. Add this sentence ‘This does not apply to Guantanamo Bay’. There is a parallel. In India, the RTI, the Right to Information Act is applicable to the whole of the country excepting for a state called J&K. Don’t ask why. That is how democracies function. You know this better. All animals are equal but some are more equal than the others.
Don’t stop immigration. We have some worthy Italians in India waiting to migrate. They would help revive Lehman Bros.
Recently on a trip to New York, I was closeted with 50 folks in a huge conference. After tired days of answering numerous and repetitive questions over a period of 2 weeks, I was longing for the last day when I was hoping to pack my bags to another location in the US for another round of sessions.
The day finally arrived. It happened to be a Friday.
I was hurrying up for my meeting while my mind was going over the meeting schedules and the happenings of the past one week.
And I took the lift to my 22-nd floor. There was another gentleman in the lift who had apparently pressed 23. When I had pressed 22 I noticed that he has let out a sigh. Probably he was in a hurry and didn’t expect anybody else but him to be the occupant of the lift.
Once the door closed, I began to think of the days’ proceedings. And was momentarily lost in thoughts.
I heard a not so congenial sound when I noticed that the lifts’ door had opened. But I was still lost in thoughts and didn’t realize that the doors had opened.
The gentleman in tweed suit said, “you pressed 2. Didn’t you?” And his manner was extremely rude.
It just dawned on me that I was staring at the open door without getting out of the lift.
In a jiffy I apologized and exited the lift when I heard him say, “Oh these Asians, what a pain ?”.
He was probably uttering some more words but I couldn’t listen to them as the doors closed by then.
But when I regained my composure, I began to wonder, “why is everyone in a hurry ? And where has the human dignity gone that one takes no time to swear at another without any hesitation? And what is going to happen if you are delayed by a minute ? Why does one not stop to think that the other person who might have been absent minded for a moment could have had a bad day, or might have had some terrible news to break to others or something to that effect?’
Did the swear justify the delay of say 30 seconds ? Or did the 30 second delay in my moving out of the lift deserve such a swear ?
I might never meet the person again in my life. But he has successfully ensured that I carry a wholly negative image of him all through my life.
நாம் நினைப்பது ஒன்றாகவும் நடப்பது வேறு ஒன்றாகவும் இருக்கும். பல முறை இப்படி நடந்து விட்டதால் எனக்கு இதில் ஆச்சரியம் இல்லை. ஆனால் இந்த முறை ஒரு வருத்தம் இருந்தது.
சிங்கப்பூர் தேசீயப் பல்கலையின் ஊடகவியல் ஆராய்ச்சித் துறையில் ஒரு ஆய்வு நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. சிங்கப்பூரின் சீன, மலாய், தமிழ் வலைஞர்கள் பற்றிய ஒரு ஆய்வு. அதற்கு அழைப்பு வந்திருந்தது. சி.தே.பல்கலையின் திரு.அருண் மகிழ்நன் அழைத்திருந்தார். ‘ஆ.. பக்கங்கள்’ குறித்துப் பேசக் கேட்டிருந்தார். உடனே ஒப்புக்கொண்டிருந்தேன்.
ஆனால் விதி விளையாடியது. நிகழ்வு துவங்கும் ஒரு வாரம் முன்னர் அலுவலகத்தில் உடனடியாக எம் நிறுவனத்தின் தலைமை அலுவலகத்திற்கு அமெரிக்கா செல்லச் சொன்னார்கள். 20 நாட்கள் பயணம். ‘இப்படி ஆகிவிட்டதே’ என்று வருத்தத்துடன் சி.தே.பல்கலைக்குத் தெரிவித்தேன்.
இப்படி வருத்தத்துடன் துவங்கியது அமெரிக்கப் பயணம்.
சுமார் 10 முறைகள் அமெரிக்கா சென்றிருப்பேன். ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் ஒவ்வொரு அனுபவம். ஆனால் இந்த முறை இதுவரை பெற்ற அனுபங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் தூக்கிச் சாப்பிடும் வகையில் அமைந்துவிட்டது. முதல் இரண்டு வாரம் நியூ யார்க்கில் ஒரு கருத்தரங்கு நடத்தவேண்டும். பின்னர் டெக்ஸாஸில் ( டல்லாஸ்) எங்கள் அலுவலகத்தில் வங்கியின் இணையத் தொடர்புகள் தொடர்பான சில கட்டமைப்புக்களைச் செய்ய வேண்டும். இதுதான் வேலை.

முதல் இரண்டு வாரங்களும் தந்த அனுபவங்கள் சொல்ல முடியாதவை.
மனித முயற்சியின் உச்ச பரிணாமத்தையும் கண்டேன்; மனிதனை மேம்படுத்த வந்த ஒரு மதத்தின் பெயரால் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்டிருந்த அகோரத்தின் இன்றைய நிலையையும் கண்டேன். மனிதனிடம் மனிதம் மேம்படச் செய்யவே மதங்கள் என்று பறைசாற்றப்பட்டிருந்தது. ஆனால் மனிதனிடமிருந்து மனிதத் தன்மையைக் கழற்றி, அவனை விலங்குகளின் பட்டியலில் கோரத்தின் அடிப்படையில் முதல் தரம் வகிக்கும் ஒரு விலங்காக உயர்த்திய ஒரு செயல் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட நகரம் தான் நியூ யார்க்.
ஒரு பக்கம் மனித முயற்சியின் உச்சத்தால் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள வளர்ச்சியும் இன்னொரு பக்கம் மதம் பிடித்ததால் எற்பட்ட மனிதத்தன்மையின் வீழ்ச்சியினையும் காண முடிந்தது.
ஒரு பக்கம் ‘எம்ப்பையர் ஸ்டேட் பில்டிங்’ ( Empire State building ) மனிதனின் உழைப்பின் உயர்வை உணர்த்துகிறது. சிறிது தூரம் தள்ளி, மதம் பிடித்த மனிதன் நிகழ்த்திய மானுட வீழ்ச்சியின் அடையாளமாக ‘கிரௌண்ட் ஜீரோ’ (Ground Zero) தெரிகிறது.
சுதந்திர தேவியும் நானும்
ஒரு பக்கம் எல்லீஸ் தீவில் ( Ellis Island) உள்ள சுதந்திர தேவியின் சிலை மனித விடுதலையையும் அதற்குக் காரணமான மனித முயற்சியையும் உணர்த்துகிறது. இந்தச் சிலை 1804-ல் எழுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது. பிரான்ஸு நாட்டின் ஈஃபில் கோபுரத்தை வடிவமைத்த அதே ஈஃபில் தான் சுதந்திர தேவியின் உள்ளே அமைந்துள்ள உட்புறக் கட்டமைப்பையும் வடிவமைத்துள்ளார். தேவி நிற்கும் இடத்தின் அருகில் தான் பல நாடுகளில் இருந்து வந்த குடியேறிகள் புகலிடம் அளிக்கப்பட்டனர். அப்படிப் புகலிடம் பெற்றவர்கள் சேர்ந்து உருவாக்கிய நகரம் தான் நியூ யார்க். இது மனித ஆற்றலின் ஒரு உன்னத வெளிப்பாடாகத் திகழ்கிறது.
இன்னொரு பக்கம் இரட்டைக் கோபுரம் நின்ற இடம். கரிய நிறமான பளிங்கால் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. சதுர அமைப்பில் உள்ளது. சதுரக் குழியின் உள்ளே நீர் விழுவது போல் அமைத்துள்ளனர். அதன் கரையில் உள்ள கைப்பிடிச் சுவர்களில் அந்தக் கோர நிகழ்வின் போது உயிர் இழந்தவர்களின் பெயர்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. மதத்தின் உந்துதலால் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட இந்தக் கொடுமையில் அதே மதத்தின் சில அப்பாவிகளும் இறந்தனர் என்பது அந்தப் பெயர்களில் இருந்து தெரிந்தது.
மதம் தெரியாத தீவிரவாதம்பிறவாக் குழந்தையுடன் காலமான பெண்
என் மனதில் அந்த நினைவுச் சின்னத்தின் அமைப்பு பற்றி ஒரு எண்ணம் தோன்றியது. அதை சதுர வடிவத்தில், அதுவும் கரிய நிறத்தில், கீழே குழி போல் அமைக்க வேண்டிய காரணம் என்ன ? அமெரிக்கர்கள் இதனால் உலகிற்கு அல்லது இந்தக் கோர நிழ்வை நிகழ்த்திய வெறியர்களுக்கும் அவர்களின் காரணிகளுக்கும் சொல்ல விரும்புவது என்ன ?

கரிய நிறத்தில், பூமியில் இருந்து எழுந்து நிற்கும் சதுர வடிவான ஒரு பெரிய கல் உணர்த்தும் ஒரு வாழ்க்கை வழிமுறை எங்கள் நாட்டில் அதே அமைப்பில் பூமியில் புதைக்கப் படுகிறது என்று இருக்கலாமோ ? அல்லது மேல் நோக்கி நிற்கும் அந்தக் கல் காலம் காலத்திற்கும் எங்களுக்கு நிகழ்த்திய இந்த மாபாதகம் உலகின் வரலாறுகளில் கீழ்மையான ஒரு சித்தாந்தம் என்று உணர்த்தப்பட வேண்டி இருக்குமோ ? (அமெரிக்கர்களின் செயல்களுக்குப் பின் காரணங்கள் இல்லாமல் இருக்காது. அது ஈராக் படை எடுப்பாக இருக்கட்டும் அல்லது வேறு ஏதாவது செயலாக இருக்கட்டும். அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு சாதகம் இல்லாமல் எந்தச் செயலையும் செய்ய மாட்டார்கள்.)
இப்படி எதுவாகவும் இருக்கலாம். அல்லது இவை என் ஊகங்களாகவும் இருக்கலாம். இது பற்றி உடன் பணியாற்றும் ஒரு அமெரிக்கரைக் கேட்டேன். ‘எம் மக்கள் இவ்வளவு யோசித்திருப்பார்களா என்பது சந்தேகமே’, என்று கூறினார்.
ஆனால் அதன் அருகிலேயே மீண்டும் இரட்டைக் கோபுரங்கள் எழுப்பப் படுகின்றன. அது மனதிற்கு நிறைவளித்தது.
எது எப்படி இருந்தாலும் ஒன்று நிச்சயம். ‘தன் வினை தன்னைச் சுடும்’ என்பதே அது.
இந்தக் ‘கிரௌண்ட் ஜீரோ’. இருக்கட்டும். இன்னொரு ‘கிரௌண்ட் ஜீரோ’ இருக்கிறது தெரியுமா ?
முதலாவது அமெரிக்காவிற்கு மட்டும் அழிவை ஏற்படுத்தியது. ஆனால் இரண்டாவது உலகிற்கே அழிவை ஏற்படுத்தியது.
ஆம். உலக வர்த்தகத்தின் ஆணி வேர் என்று போற்றப்படும் ‘வால் தெரு’ (Wall Street) தான் அது. பல நாடுகளிலும் தோன்றிய பாரம்பரிய பொருளாதார முறைகளை அடியோடு அழித்தொழித்த அமெரிக்க முதலாளித்துவத்தின் துவக்கம் கண்ட தெரு அது. உலகத்தின் பல நாடுகளின் வங்கிகளும் அங்கே அலுவலகங்கள் கொண்டுள்ளன. அமெரிக்கப் பெருமுதலாளிகளின் இருப்பிடம் அது.
எல்லாவற்றையும் விட சீனாவின் சில வங்கிகளும் உள்ளன. என் பொருளாதார சித்தாந்தத்தின் படி, சீனாவின் வளர்ச்சி உலகிற்கு உகந்தது இல்லை. அவர்களுக்கு ஜனநாயகம் கிடைக்கும் வரை சீனாவின் வளர்ச்சி நமக்கு நல்லதல்ல. அதைப்பற்றித் தனியான பதிவு எழுத வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

வாஷிங்டன் பதவி ஏற்ற இடத்தில் ஒரு பிச்சைக் காரர்
அந்த இடத்தில் நான் ஒரு காட்சி கண்டேன். ஜார்ஜ் வாஷிங்டன் பதவி ஏற்ற இடம் அது. அந்தச் சிலையின் அடியில் ஒரு பிச்சைக்காரர் குழல் ஊதியபடி அமர்ந்திருந்தார். அவருக்கு அருகில் சில காசுகள் கிடந்தன. ஆங்கிலத்தில் ‘Irony’ என்பார்கள். ஸ்ருதிபேதம் என்று அழைக்கலாம் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.
இந்தப் பயணத்தில் அமெரிக்காவில் சில இடங்களுக்கு உள் நாட்டில் பயணம் செய்ய வேண்டி இருந்தது. எல்லாம் விமானப் பயணம் தான். ஒன்று மட்டும் நிச்சயம். எந்த அமெரிக்க விமானச் சேவையும் சிங்கப்பூர் ஏர்லைன்ஸ் சேவைக்கு ஒப்பாகாது. சிங்கையில் இருந்து கிளம்பி அமெரிக்கா செல்லும் வரையிலும் பிறகு லாஸ் ஏஞ்ஜல்ஸில் இருந்து கிளம்பி சிங்கப்பூர் வரும் வரையிலும் சிங்கப்பூர் ஏர்லைன்ஸ் தான். A-380 வகை விமானம். விமானமும் சரி, பணியாளர்களும் சரி வேறு ஒரு நாட்டிற்கும் இப்படி வாய்க்கவில்லை என்று நினைக்கிறேன். கேப்டன். கதிர், கேப்டன். சரவணன் என்று தமிழர்கள் தலைமை விமானிகளாக வந்தனர் என்பது மகிழ்ச்சி அளித்தது. எனது அமெரிக்காவின் உள் நாட்டுப் பயணம் அமெரிக்கன் ஏர்லைன்ஸ், டெல்டா முதலியவற்றில் நடந்தது. அவர்கள் சேவை சொல்லிக்கொள்ளும்படி இல்லை.
அமெரிக்காவின் விமான நிலையங்களில் பாதுகாப்புக் கட்டுப்படுகள் 5 ஆண்டுகள் முன்பு இருந்த படியே உள்ளது. எல்லா இடங்களிலும் ‘திரௌபதி உடை அவிழ்த்தல்’ போல் எல்லாவற்றையும் களைய வேண்டி உள்ளது. ஆனால் யாரும் மறுப்பதில்லை. ‘ நான் யாரு தெரியும்லே’ போன்ற வீர வசனங்கள் இல்லை.
சரவண பவன் பற்றிச் சொல்லியாக வேண்டும். நியூ யார்க் சரவண பவன் சிங்கப்பூரின் சரவண பவனை விட தேவலாம். ஆனால் டல்லாஸின் சரவண பவன் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட அருமை. சாத்வீகமான உணவு. நம் சிங்கப்பூரின் சரவண பவனும் முன்னேறினால் சரி. உணவின் விலை மட்டும் ஏற்றினால் போதாது. உணவின் தரமும் உயர வேண்டும். உயரும் என்று நம்புவோம்.
ஒரு விஷயம். நியூ யார்க் நகரில் லெக்ஸிங்டன் அவென்யூவில் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்த போது ஒபாமாவும் சென்றார். அவருக்காக சரியாக ஒன்றரை நிமிடம் போக்குவரத்தை நிறுத்தினார்கள்.
ஒபாமா வந்திருந்தார்
டல்லாஸில் டெக்ஸாஸ் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்குச் சென்றிருந்தேன். அதிக அளவில் தெலுங்கு பேசுகிறார்கள். UTT என்ற பல்கலையின் பெயரை ‘University of Telugu and Tamil’ என்று பெயர் மாற்றினால் ஆச்சரியப்பட வேண்டியதில்லை.
இவை தவிர எம் நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றும் ஒரு யூதப் பெரியவருடன் ஒரு நாள் அவரது மதம், சம்பிரதாயம், கலாச்சாரம் பற்றிப் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். ஒரு புத்தகம் போட வேண்டிய அளவிற்குச் செய்திகள் சொன்னார் அவர். யூத சம்பிரதாயத்திற்கும் அத்வைதத்திற்கும் பிரும்மம் குறித்து சில ஒற்றுமைகள் இருப்பதாகப் படுகிறது. முடிந்தபோது அது பற்றியும் எழுதலாம் என்று இருக்கிறேன்.
பல பேதங்கள், பல ஒற்றுமைகள், சில ஆச்சர்யங்கள் என்று இந்த முறை அமெரிக்கப் பயணம் அமைந்தது.
I don’t know if Rahul and his mom consider you as the Prime Minister of my country. But you are my Prime Minister. I don’t care about what illiterates and half-baked pundits think about you. ( Note: Rahul is Rahul Gupta of Class III, my son’s friend at school and his mother is Smt. Soundarya Gupta, lest you should be mistaken).
So, you are my Prime Minister and I consider you as one because you are sitting on the same chair that Atal Behari Vajpayee once sat. And I know how powerful he made me feel when he was the PM. Therefore the position of the Indian Prime Minister wields that much power and prestige and I consider that you also have the same. And not to forget Indira Gandhi who tired even Nixon and Kissinger.
Apologies, I forgot to introduce myself. I am one of those 1.2 bn guys who calls India his home, an ordinary citizen of the great nation.
Let me come to the point.
Sir, I know that you have been too busy these many years surviving and putting up with the bunch of folks who call themselves ministers in your government. I know it would have been too much for you, considering your age and erudition. Even we are not able to bear with the budget speech of your finance minister, just one minister, and you have to bear with the ramblings of many such. I pity you though.
But there is something I need to tell you for sure. And that is about the country called India.
There was this half-baked poet called Mahakavi Bharathy. He said in Tamil ,’பாரத நாடு பழம் பெரும் நாடு, நீரதன் புதல்வர், இந்நினைவு அகற்றாதீர்’. I will translate it myself soon as if you ask any of your Tamil Ministers in your cabinet to translate it for you they might come back and say that they didn’t know Hindi. Any ways, here is the translation – “India is a great country and you are her children. Never ever remove that thought from your minds”. That is what this poet had said in 1915.
I don’t care whether your party comes to power next or the other folks from Gujarat come to power. Who ever comes I would only expect to see that you guys don’t damage my country.
So I , as an ordinary common-man of this country, has developed that much dare devilry that I am offering some tips for you :

The US Consul episode concerning Devyani. i am not so naive to believe that there is nothing more to it than meets the eye. So, just in case I am wrong and just in case the US wants to show its muscle, here are some ways of handling them.
The US understands just one thing – Dollar. So, make an announcement of a strategic partnership with Russia on a transnational oil pipeline. Don’t need to actually execute that. Just make an announcement something to the effect that this oil pipeline is to commemorate the 60 years of India-Soviet friendship. No need to believe in that. But the US will come scurrying around.
Please ask Pranab da to make a visit to Venezuela and Brazil with a stop over in Cuba. And then on the last leg of the journey, let him visit Beijing and admire the beauty of the ‘Forbidden City’. And don’t forget a photo-op with the Chinese Premier. Next you can expect John Kerry to come to India leading a business delegation.
And Sir, there is this city called Teheran. It has a great heritage. It was the home of the Parsi community until some time. So, it would be helpful for your Petroleum Minister’s health to go to Teheran to visit the different centers of learning there and then accidentally happen to meet with the Iranian President and incidentally happen to invite him as the Chief Guest for the oncoming Republic Day. Even before he comes back to Delhi, you can expect the US to issue a stamp on Mahatma Gandhi followed by a rousing speech by its President from the White House. (Yes, he has already fixed his economy by speaking). Before I forget, make a speech on the possibility of paying for Iranian gas not by currency but by a commodity barter arrangement.
The IIM in Ahmedabad wants to have a discipline to study alternative payment mechanisms for world oil trade. So you could institute a chair in the IIM to explore such a possibility. Or at least make an announcement. And the next call would be from Saudi Arabia offering oil for rupees.
And before I forget, the French President would want to come to India to get photographed in front of the Taj Mahal. And that is the time when Raffale Aviation would also issue a statement that the Indian Air Force has evaluated their fighter jets and are closer to inking a deal. And voila, the US F-35s’ would have depreciated by 50% and would be available on e-Bay. And the US Marshalls who had ‘inadvertently’ and ‘erroneously’ and ‘due to lack of application of mind’ arrested Devyani – they would be booked for a traffic offence. How coincidental all these would be.
And the best part is, for any one of the above, you don’t need permission from anybody.
I just expect that the seat of PMO becomes as powerful as it was in 2004.
And if everything else fails, there is an easy way as well. Send this Dig Vijay Singh to Washington as India’s Ambassador. He will find that George Washington came to power due to RSS help and start talking on that. You could forget the US for the next ten years.
The unusual rhetoric shown by the government, that too all arms of the government acting in unison, on this Devyani episode in the US when the Indian Deputy Consul was arrested, hand-cuffed and strip-searched, makes me believe that there is more to it than meets the eye.
For one, I refused to believe that Rahul cancelled a meeting with the US Congressmen. And the soft-spoken Meira Kuumar, the speaker, cancelled hers as well. And the US diplomats in the whole of India have been asked to hand over their passes.
This unusual act in unison, in my analysis, might mean any one or more of the following :
The US is pushing for some aircraft or military deal that India is inclined to give to some French company. The US needs the deal more than India needs the aircraft. So they might be trying to push for the obsolete aircraft such as F-16.
The Congress ( India’s Congress Party ) has lost the recent elections in a catastrophic manner and hence needs to show some muscle to face the oncoming elections.
Some funds that are likely to benefit the ruling establishment are held by the US for some Anti Money Laundering reasons. And hence this drama of “we-will-also-treat-you-bad” is being enacted by the UPA of India.
The US is trying to placate China on the South China Sea Air Corridor issue and hence wants to prove to them that they are indeed not supporting India against the China.
The UPA wants a ‘tit-for-tat’ for Sonia being served summons in the US. THey are not being sure that they would come back to power to seek revenge.
Apart from the above there could be other un-known reasons as well like Rahul’s FBI case coming up soon for hearing and the like.
But one thing is clear :
The UPA would not act in India’s interests.
So, just in case the US is trying to play games, what should India do :
Go pally-pally with China and Russia.
Declare some Free Trade Agreement with Russia.
Invite the Iranian President as guest for the Republic Day.
Celebrate something like the ’60th year of Indo-Soviet Friendship’
Announce another Nuclear Reactor commissioning, say , in Jaipur with Russian collaboration.
Ask President Mukherjee to visit China, Venezuela and Iran and sign some agreements.
But in case the UPA is playing games forget this episode as they usually play games like they have played with India’s growth in the last 10 years.
The Chinese are at it again. Like their gas and oil companies, their copper companies are on a global buying spree. This time again they are after the copper mines in Latin America.
The deals are at least a billion dollars worth each and every time. And the companies are state run companies that have official sanction for all kinds of malpractices all the world over.
The Wall Street Journal reports that in 2013 alone, the Chinese companies have signed up $ 1billion worth of copper mines in Peru while the comparable deal value in 2012 was $660 million.
The country imports 3.4 tons of copper while consuming 30% of the worlds’ Copper produce.
So what is interesting to note is that worldwide copper prices are softening and hence the assets that China is accumulating by way of owning copper mines are enormous.
And the dangerous part is that there are no new copper mines that are going to open up in the near future. Anything that becomes a monopoly, that too in the hands of China, is not good for the world.
With the U.S fighting its own internal wars between its Republicans and Democrats and Obama not really being able to exert the U.S.s “power” so to say, we are increasing heading towards a world that is being gobbled up in parts by China by way of its acquisition of the worlds’ fuel and mineral resources.
The Chinese are already in the Indian Ocean area exploring the ocean bed for resources. They are at loggerheads with almost every country in the South China Sea for its reserves of Hydro Carbons and have already gobbled up most of the African republics ( if you could call them so ) and thus ensured that they get oil at priority rates by helping every dictator with slush funds disguised as “payments for services rendered “.
The are in Sri Lanka having built a deep water port for them where they have been provided free boarding and lodging for their oil carrying ships.
This does not augur well for the stability of the world powers that too democratic ones that have to overcome every known opposition and stumbling block in their country to do at least a fraction of what China does overseas.
The only choice to check this is the U.S. But they are more concerned about overhearing what people talk about in their homes while leaving the real issues to address themselves.
